For a taste of heaven : « Shakespeare and Compagny »

Trip to Paris - Visit with the school, January 9th 2013.

« Shakespeare and Company » is an English bookstore which is situated in the heart of the city of Paris, near Notre-Dame (the most famous gothic cathedral in the world) at kilometer zero.

This bookstore was opened by George Whitman, in the summer of 1951. He was born on December, 12th 1913 and died on December, 14th 2011. So, he was 98 years old. He was the owner.

Today, it’s the only traditional store of English books left in the capital,

after the "Village-Voice" in the 6th district closed. Most of the people who run « Shakespeare and Company » originate from England and the USA.

The store is very small and indoors we can see many books stacked on the wooden shelves and there are also occasional ladders which allow us to view other books which are out of reach.

In this place, the books are classified by categories. There are books on religion, mostly Christian, there are also fiction, economics, documentaries and history books.

For a taste of heaven, you should live in this motherland of books.

Then, on the floor, there are more books, including books for children. Next, there are the messages of many foreigners who left their email or also phone numbers, for communication. Because there are a lot of people from all over the world, who come to visit.

It’s really good ! We can play the piano and try to type with the vintage typewriters.

Anyway, this English bookstore is a sight to see, that you must miss on no account !! ! For young and old people alike.
