BLACKBERRY AND Mr BOOHOO

Le blues, le vrai !

Nos anciens élèves débordent de talent !
( scroll down to the bottom of the page for Jackie’s english translation)

Our ex- pupils have got talent !

What does ’ Blackberry ’ mean to you ?
Is it :
A) : a smart phone for the techno geeks to get stressed about ?
or B) a new development of ’Le Berry Noir ’ with flavours of the Mississippi blue notes and Baton Rouge swamp blues ?

Are you confused ? Then let me explain a bit more. Bastien Alzuria was a student of our lycée in 2003 and is today, half of the blues duo ’Blackberry and Mr Boohoo’.

Bastien Alzuria, the Blackberry half of the duo, (slide guitar) et Mr BooHoo (Frank Bailly, charismatic singer, harmonica virtuoso and Clifton Chenier-style accordianist ) bring you the spirit of those mississippi delta voodoo. They certainly lead you right into the heart of the magical blues territory where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil at those famous crossroads.

Like Robert Johnson, Blackberry and Mr Boohoo have the blues surging through them from their fingers to their toes.

They play fast and ‘hot’ using their well worn cuban heeled boots to stamp out the beat on wooden platforms covered with chains, as another instrument, and engulfing you in their world of steaming hot burning blues.

I had the good fortune to hear them at JJ’s Bar

- do you know it ? A tiny bar owned by Jon and Jacky, in Aigurande, but you could have been beside the bayou in the heart of Cajun country. Blackberry, elegant and charming and proud like Corto Maltese ( a well known French cartoon character). Mr Boohoo, sharp and as cool as a wolf !!! They played a set of wondrous acoustic blues and just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, they burned us up with their electric set. Banal they are not !!! Their expertise flowed through the air, their fingers dancing across the fret board and the wind of the bayou whistling through the harmonica as if it was alive, tempting you to follow and lose yourself in the true heart of the blues and the Mississipi basin.

I saw and heard many interesting things that night in Aigurande. I saw an audience of teens and adults - French, English and Irish and probably many other nationalities too, as well as many of the aged locals who arrived on their blue « mobylettes » ( vintage french mopeds from the 70’s ! ) and drank their beer and joyfully joined in the good times which were rocking that little bar. Everyone was tapping their feet and joining in with the music. Outside the sky was clear and full of stars, the moon was full. I saw a pretty girl dancing in front of the band, entranced, soon joined by many others - including one well built older gent with muscles like an ox and extremely well toned for his age.He took off his shirt - which then precipited a few others to do the same all in good humour and of course good taste. It was an unforgettable night. I went home, couldn’t sleep, replaying the evening feeling as if I was still in ’The Big Easy’ of the deep south of USA along with everyone at JJ’s and still intoxicated by the music of Blackberry and Mr Boohoo, and the ’cherry on the cake’ being one of them was one of students here at our lycée in La Chatre. Those guys really did put a spell on us. Incredible.
